My Fair Bluestocking by Nina Jarrett is a witty and hilarious sensation. It had funny moments that made me laugh, such as the banter between the two main characters, Perry, the hero, and Emma, the heroine. There were also moments when I wanted to throw the book across the room, but I couldn’t because I just had to keep reading. Jarrett does a fantastic job of writing to evoke emotions.

About the Book

My Fair Bluestocking boasts an intricate storyline between the spare to the Earldom, Peregrine Balfour, also known as Perry throughout the book, and the country miss, Emma Davis. Perry is a rogue who does little more than galavant through polite society, using his well-tailored manners and manipulation skills to get exactly what he wants in life.

He has balked at the thought of marriage for a long time as he has nothing to offer a fine lady. After all, he is only a spare, and his brother is already married. He has little chance of ascending to Earl status any time soon.

However, his brother’s new bride is always sending projects his way in an effort to reform him. She hits on the perfect one when her husband wants to sponsor the country miss who raised his illegitimate son after the death of the boy’s mother. (That is as complicated as it sounds.)

The Earl and his new countess plan to outfit the young lady with a wardrobe and set her upon the ton so that she will be around a little longer for the little boy, as the boy misses her dearly. The Earl himself is a very busy man and so decides to send his brother to fetch Emma, no matter the price.

The price is high, two wardrobes and two ladies launched into the ton instead of one, because the heroine, Emma Davis, won’t go without her sister! In fact, she doesn’t want a season at all.

The banter between the family and between Emma and Perry is witty, hilarious, and then again, at some points, rather cutting and cruel. It makes for a very compelling read.

Throughout the book, Emma, the eldest sister, often seems like the younger one because she is a little less mature in the ways of the ton and doesn’t catch on as quickly to manners and whatnot. However, Perry is described as looking like something from Greek mythology. He is so handsome and fit. In a funny turn of events, all the man does is drink and cut a path through London’s high society. By all accounts, he should not look the way he does. You got to love the Regency genre for that, as it is a common theme.

Speaking of manners and rules of society, there are layers of regency history astutely woven into the tale, and every moment of it is interesting. My Fair Bluestocking is a deeper read with twists and turns appearing from the character’s pasts at some of the most inopportune times. It can easily work as a stand-alone novel or part of the series.
