Book Review: The Captain’s Scottish Bride by Aline Francis
The Captain’s Scottish Bride by Aline Francis is set in the Stuarts era—1652—and is a great historical romance novel. Set a couple of years after the Dunbar battle between the armies of England and Scotland. The book retains some historical accuracy as it discusses the tension between two lands. It also incorporates the ending of the civil war in England between the Royalists and Parliamentarians.

More About the Book and Characters
Captain Thomas Landrake is the son of the Earl of Herford and a Royalist who acted in the best interest of the crown in the novel. He had been involved in the war efforts in Scotland and brought back a Scottish witch to save her from the witch hunt in her village. This is the second book in the series, so it takes about the first fourth of the book to catch up to speed on how Freyja, the heroine, came to be with the Captain and his parents.
Freyja is an interesting character as she tries to embrace the culture of England and fit in as an english lady of society. However, she is a bit of a wild woman at heart, at home in nature, mixing and picking her herbs.
The love story does not exactly feel real, as the couple is “already in love” at the beginning of the book. The antagonist characters, also known as the cousins, were purposefully spiteful, but there was no personal gain for them for acting as such.
The story has a happy ending and continues from book one. The book would be better if you read book one before embarking on reading book two as it would be easier to understand.
