How To Make Money As a Self Published Author

There are a few ways you can approach making money online with Amazon as a self-published author, and Kindle Vella is one of them. Amazon is putting a lot of bonus dollars into the program because it is still so new and wants it to succeed. It had a quiet launch in July or so of 2021, but recently it became available to readers on the Kindle Android app.

People who have the Kindle App can now:

• Read books through the Kindle Unlimited Program
• Buy and read ebooks
• Read Kindle Vella Stories

As an author, this is excellent news for you because you can generate an income through these methods.

The Kindle Unlimited program can be pretty profitable, and you will enroll your ebooks in KDP select to be a part of it. For example, in January and February of this year, I made about $0.004 per page read through the Kindle Unlimited Program under one of my other pen names. I only had around 350 Kindle Unlimited page reads in January, which means I made approximately $1.40 or so. However, after doing some free promotions to boost my books in February, I received over 4000 page reads.

That is a significant jump from month to month. In February, I earned around $17 from the Kindle Unlimited Program. That doesn’t include what I made from Kindle Vella.

How To Make Money With Kindle Vella

Sadly, the amount of money you can earn from Kindle Vella is pretty low. One reader for an episode of over 3000 words will barely earn you a dime. As far as the writing industry goes, it is pitiable at best.

Fortunately, Amazon has been giving writing bonuses to authors who turn traffic and lead to coin sales. While I didn’t receive anything from my writing in January, I had two new readers. This resulted in an almost $20 bonus from Kindle Vella.

So, your goal should always be to get new readers to make money on the Kindle Vella platform. You should be posting more stories and advertising on other media to do this. The Kindle Vella Platform does not have a way to connect with readers. In fact, on the android app, it reads almost just as any other book would.

Build Your Audience

Work on building up your audience for your writing. For instance, after my minor success with the Kindle Vella post in January, I started putting more effort into this website and Pinterest. You can also:

• Create Facebook groups
• Build a launch team with an email listing
• Advertise on Instagram
• Create Viral Pinterest Stories

Kindle Vella Vella Tips

Kindle Vella goes really fast! It is a much quicker process than writing a book. In fact, it is like posting a continued romance blog each week or whatever genre you decide to publish your stories in. I launched my first Kindle Vella in September of 2021. I only got one reader and completely redid the entire story because I didn’t like my initial plan. I have found the with Kindle Vella:

• 1000 words are the episode sweet spot for both reading and writing
• Read and edit your work at least 3 times before you publish
• It is easy to get sloppy with the platform because it goes by so fast
• Write ahead of time and schedule your posts to stay on track

These are all great tips I wish I had known when I started Kindle Vella. It would have saved me some time redoing the process. However, I also use Grammarly for my line editing. It is the perfect tool for line editing because it gives you:

• Analyzes the stories mood
• Provides a reading level
• Proofreads for conciseness and clarity
