Book Review: Lady Luck And The Lyon (New Steamy Historical Romance)
Lady Luck and the Lyon (edition 1) is a historical romance novel written by Chasity Bowlin. It is part of the famous regency romance series The Lyons Den. The series contains over 20 books written by a conglomeration of authors, and Lady Luck and the Lyon sits at number 22.
In what seems to be a pandemic-length effort, the series comes up with a new and witty regency novel just about every month. Is it every regency author’s dream of getting a book in this series or another big regency romance series? Probably so!
About The Romance Author
Chasity Bowlin has written many great historical romance novels. She is among the most snatched up author for my Kindle Unlimited reading adventures when I relax for a lovely night with a book.
However, Lady Luck and the Lyon is like catching a bad case of the Lyons! I won’t say it was a “roaring disaster,” but it fell short of many of the other works within the Lyons Den series and was not like Chasity Bowlin’s typical writing style or take on characters.
Summary Of The Historical Romance Novel
The Lyons Den series creates a fictional world of its own set in regency England around the early 1800s. It centers around love stories created by the Black Widow of Whitehall, known best as Mrs. Bessie Dove-Lyon. She runs a gamming hell that doubles as a match-making venture for the upper ten thousand as an alluring widow. The series typically features at least one rags to riches character. Lady Luck and the Lyon characters are not out of the same box as the rest, though.
Garrick Bancroft, also known as Viscount Lynley, is a prude. There is no nice way to put it. While he has the sophistication, social standing, and ultimately wealth of a man that women in the regency era would long to marry, he does not have a great disposition. Not for a man of today’s standards, and not even for a man of early 1800’s regency romance novels.
On the other hand, Miss Ellis Lockhart is a rather pathetic character with very little charm. She is constantly falling all over not only her feet but also her words. Ellis is also plump. As a “plump” lady myself, it was interesting in the beginning to read all about this romance and how the stand-offish viscount would fall in love with her despite her bad qualities. Unfortunately, Ellis’s insecurities and bad qualities took center stage in the book and were wax poeticized by the author throughout. When you pick up a romance novel, you want to be transported to a dream world if you are anything like me. You don’t want to be constantly reminded of your insecurities.
The storyline starts as a marriage of convenience tale to follow the main series goal of rags to riches stories. However, there is an assortment of other micro storylines within the chapters to anticipate. For instance, you will probably notice the following:
- Masquerade and mistaken Identity plot twist
- Indecent proposal tales
- Spinsters and the men who fall head over heels for them
If Lady Luck and the Lyon seems like a book you would like then go ahead and read the first three chapters for free!
How This Regency Era Romance Compares To Its Series
The Lyons Den characters feature strong women who know what they want but have gotten themself into a desperate situation socially. They also typically feature destitute men who have wound up in this state due to some array of family matters. However, Lady Luck and the Lyon deviate from the series quite a bit. The viscount isn’t exactly broke. He just needs a wife to access his funds, and Lady Ellis isn’t precisely fallen from grace in society until she is married.
After hearing about the crazy characters and deviated plot twists, if you are part of the Kindle Unlimited program and the book is free to you, you should go ahead and read it. That is number 22 in the series. If you have come this far, it contains vital information about the Lyons Den gaming hell plotline that the authors will probably be carrying forth within the other books.
Clean To Steamy Romance Rating
The story itself had some interesting points that will make you laugh. It also has some that will make you cringe. But there is a lot of intimate tales and references. On a scale from Bree Wolf (clean regency romance) to KJ Jackson, who writes things a little spicier, this would land on the KJ Jackson side. There are over five tales of intimate encounters between the hero and the heroine of this book. On the other hand, the language within the book is very mild, and it is kept very “tasteful” instead of trashy. On the clean to steamy romance rating, this book is rated five flaming hearts!
Will Lady Luck and the Lyon Keep Your Attention?
The first five chapters go from about 0 to 60. They are paced so fast that you wonder if there will be anything left for the author to write about going forward for the rest of the book. That is probably why so many intimate scenes found their way in. However, the pace levels out, and it is not a slow book. There is some witty drama in every chapter.
Historical Romance Book Rating
I felt a little encouraged by the love story between a lavishly good-looking man and a dowdy girl after ending this book. It gave me a feeling there may be hope for the rest of us unmarried ladies after all. However, I was a little unsettled after reading page upon page about insecurities and a poor woman stumbling all over herself. For those aspects and others, I give Lady Luck and the Lyon a three out of five stars.
Overall I would say read the book if you have read all or most of the series so far, especially if you have Kindle Unlimited because it isn’t costing you anything extra. Right now, Lady Luck and the Lyon is enrolled in the kindle unlimited program.
