Entranced by the Earl is a regency romance novel set in the 1870s, so a little later than most regency romance novels take place. It incorporates aspects of the railroad and maintains the regency era culture with the carriages, horses, and aristocracy.
The heroine of Entranced by the Earl is Evelyn Thorncroft. She is one of the main characters from book one, Bewitched by a Bluestocking. In fact, if you have read book one, you will know she is the sister of Joanna Thorncroft, Book one’s heroine. She is outspoken in her feelings about love and marriage in book one. Miss. Evelyn Thorncroft is not at all opposed to marrying a man for his money and social standing. In fact, it is her ultimate plan. She travels to England with her sister as a penniless American trying to find her mother’s stolen ring to bring her and her sisters out of poverty, but she is also on the hunt for a duke, which she sadly finds is in short supply.
However, she finds The Earl of Hawkridge instead, and their relationship is pretty complicated from the very beginning, even before they meet. Weston Weston, the Earl of Hawkridge with the double name, was raised by governesses and Eton. His father was predominantly missing throughout his life, and his only family is his twin sister Brynne. He has an icy cold exterior that is chiller than Elsa in Frozen 1. In fact, he is described as:
“Cold as a glacier, one woman had said. But handsome as sin, another had sighed.”
-Jillian Eaton, Entranced by the Earl, page 2
That is the mark of a sexy, dangerous man that Eaton is famous for writing about in her novels.
Weston was civilized, dignified, and a bit brooding. After their carriage breaks down on the way to the month-long house party, everything really goes awry. Evie (Evelyn Thorncroft) and the Earl steal a little lamb, she meets his almost fiancé, and she does the most dastardly thing of all. Against her better judgment, she falls in love.
Will that love be crushing, or will it be a smashing success story? You will actually have to wait until book four of the series, Wooed by the Wallflower, to figure out that final “happily ever after.” However, there is a tidy enough ending to tide you over with a smile until you begin book three. If Entranced by the Earl seems like a book you would like, go ahead and read the first three chapters for free!
Noteworthy Moments From Entranced By the Earl, A Regency Romance Novel
Entranced by the Earl was filled with little moments of wisdom and viewpoints that would have probably been considered modern for its staged era. One noteworthy aspect of the book is that it slips into real-life romance among the whirlwind romance novel steaminess. Evie describes past kissing experiences she has had as:
“Noses that bumped and teeth that clicked and, in one unfortunate instance that she’d like very much to forget the invasive taste of salmon.”
-Jillion Eaton, Entranced by the Earl, Page 59.
It is amusing to bring the real-life that so many people can relate to into the fantasy world of regency romance. Another such moment included Evie thinking a very libertine thought for a regency era woman:
“Surely, there was no harm in sampling the goods before buying the product. In fact, some might call it a sound business decision.”
-Jillian Eaton Entranced By the Earl, Page 61
On the reverse side, when I read this part, it made me think of the famous saying, why buy the cow when you can have the milk for free? The above quote was about Evie considering having intimate relations with the Earl before marriage.
But the true irony of this story is that Weston, the Earl of Hawkridge, was slated to marry a diamond of the first water, Lady Marry, for two years. Then along comes Evie and her little lamb (that they stole or rescued. However, you want to look at it.) It was a funny play on the classic nursery rhyme Marry had a Little Lamb if I ever saw one.
Five Star Regency Romance Novel
Entranced by the Earl novel gets five stars for its compelling plot line and lighthearted wit. It will make you laugh along the way. Furthermore, the cliffhanger at the end will make you want to get Seduced by the Scott, book three in the series, immediately. Luckily it is already out!
Steamy Regency Romance Novel
Entranced by the Earl gets four flaming hearts out of five on the steaminess scale. Some sensual scenes within the book describe the intimacy in eloquent and vivid detail. However, it is tasteful, and it is not an erotica novel by any means.
